Having a better understanding of your teeth, gums and tongue is going to help you to have a much easier time fending off all kinds of dental problems. The information below will help you to know our mouth better and to know what you can do to prevent problems and keep it healthy in many areas.

Your teeth have a direct impact on your gums

The roots of your teeth go deep into your gums which is what holds them in place. When something happens to your tooth that allows the inner part of the tooth to become damaged and/or infected then it can have a negative impact on your gum. Also, not caring for your teeth properly can lead to gingivitis which will turn into gum disease if it goes untreated for long enough.

If you end up with gingivitis it can be treated quite easily early on. Sometimes all it takes is a good cleaning from your dentist. Once you end up letting it get to gum disease you can end up suffering other problems that can be serious and you can even lose your teeth and end up needing replacements such as dentures or dental implants.

Your tongue should not be ignored

Most people brush, floss and even gargle with mouthwash, but they don't care for their tongue properly. You really need to use a tongue scraper to remove plaque and other harmful bacteria. When your tongue isn't cleaned properly it can transfer those things back onto the teeth that you have been diligently caring for. A dirty tongue can also leave you with bad breath.

Protect your teeth, gums and tongue from injury

There are many ways to protect your entire mouth, including your teeth, gums and tongue. Don't use your teeth to remove the caps off drink bottles or to open any other type of packaging. Wear a protective guard whenever you are participating in an activity where your mouth may be hit by something or you may fall and injure your face, including your mouth. If you have braces put on, make sure you use the wax that goes on the sharp parts of the brackets so you don't end up with cuts and sores on the insides of your mouth and on your tongue. Don't use wooden toothpicks to get food out of your teeth, don't bite on your fingernails and don't chew on ice cubes.

If you do end up with serious dental problems, you may need a treatment like a root canal treatment.
